Are singing lessons worth my time and money?

Ah, yes they are, a one big huge massive resounding yes! Singing lessons are worth your time and your money. Even if you can't afford formal lessons you can benefit by singing often and singing in front of others in an inconspicuous way. I'll explain what I mean later in this post.

Someone recently said to me "don't take it too seriously, it's just singing" and I understood in that moment that so many people fundamentally believe this. It's an unfortunate habit of our environment.

I won't delve into the recent funding cuts to music therapy or the Australian education systems prioritisation of sport over music, but it's suffice to say that it makes perfect sense that one might think "singing is just a bit of fun" and not something worth training in. But yes, it is actually fun! Absolutely it is, but it just so happens that in that fun you are training your body and your brain in rather impressive ways.

What if I told you "don't take it too seriously, it's just weight training"? I'm pretty sure you'd be able to rattle off the benefits of weight training to health, wellbeing, and longevity, in much the same way I could rattle of the health, wellbeing and longevity benefits of singing:

  • To strengthen a weak voice one can practice singing.

  • To alter a tone of voice one can practice singing.

  • To develop self-confidence one can practice singing.

  • To improve attention span one can practice singing.

  • To increase lung capacity one can practice singing.

Moving that fine muscle tissue (vocal cords) in quick succession as breath surges through at a fast rate is overwhelmingly positive for the weak voice. Understanding how to alter your tone, developing self-confidence, and improving your attention span can improve quality of life. And I mean, obviously, obviously increased lung capacity is beneficial for overall health and wellbeing.

Singing is simply elongated speech, therefore the ability to sing happens quite naturally. Just because something comes easily to you does not mean it is unimportant.

Yes it's super duper fun and the best thing ever to sing in a big group, or by yourself in the car or do shower karaoke! But for one reason or another we don't take seriously that which is fun.

It's a kindness of life that you can actually improve your health and your mental wellbeing without thinking too hard about it. How amazing!

If you're keen to start your singing journey but can't actually afford music lessons there are so many options available to you:

  • Every weekend there are cover bands performing all over your city playing all the hits from the 70s to today where you can go and sing along.

  • There are choirs in most towns that are free to join.

  • Some bars in your area may have karaoke nights.

  • There are plenty of songs available on YouTube where you can sing along.

Start looking after you. Start singing.
